One of the most common worries for new parents is whether their baby is getting enough milk. The good news: there are reliable signs to look for, and most babies who show them are feeding well.
Signs your baby is getting enough:
- Steady weight gain along their growth curve (after the normal initial loss in the first days).
- Regular wet nappies — around six or more heavy wet nappies a day once feeding is established.
- Regular soft stools in the early weeks.
- A settled, content baby after most feeds.
- Active, alert periods and good skin colour and tone.
Feeding length and frequency vary a lot from baby to baby, so watch your baby rather than the clock. If your baby isn’t gaining weight as expected, seems persistently unsettled or hungry, or you have ongoing feeding pain, see your pediatrician — sometimes a feeding difficulty has a treatable cause such as tongue-tie.
