Children and Teenager Fasting: Can Fasting Affect Development?

Find below the article about children and teenager fasting by Mirna Sabbagh, nutritionist , dietitian, and IBCLC at myPediaclinic (Voted best pediatric clinic in Dubai)

Children just like adults need energy to do their daily activities like walking, talking, studying or working. However, children have an even greater need for calories to sustain their rapid development. Not only that but children are much more active than adults as they often participate in sports during school days. So you might be surprised to know that some children need more calories than adults!

If we restrict their caloric intake, then they might suffer long term consequences. Children getting enough calories may be difficult during fasting months because the time between Iftar and Suhoor is so limited, however it is very important for children to get their caloric needs during the holy month. This is even more so for children who are underweight.

Is it just about calories?

No. Children also need to choose the right types of food so they can get all their vitamins and minerals during Ramadan so it does not affect their concentration or development.

Tips for children fasting during Ramadan:

1. Start Gradually from Suhoor till 11 A.M the first few days. Then Suhoor till 2 P.M by the first week. Until finally Suhoor until regular Iftar time.

2. Have 3 meals: Iftar, Suhoor, and a small meal with snacks in between
