Can You Fast and Breastfeed During Ramadan?

Many breastfeeding mothers ask whether they can safely fast during Ramadan. It’s a common and important question, and the answer depends on your circumstances.

Breastfeeding mothers are permitted an exemption from fasting in Islam if fasting may harm them or their baby. Many mothers do choose to fast, and for an established breastfeeding relationship with an older baby who is also eating solids, supply often remains stable. For a young, exclusively breastfed baby, fasting needs more care.

If you choose to fast:

  • Stay well hydrated between iftar and suhoor — aim for plenty of fluids.
  • Eat balanced, nourishing meals with enough protein, complex carbs, and healthy fats.
  • Watch your baby’s wet nappies and weight, and your own energy.
  • Stop fasting and seek advice if you feel unwell or notice a drop in supply or in your baby’s feeding.

If you’re unsure what’s right for you and your baby, speak with your doctor before deciding.
