Why You Should Avoid Giving Juices to Your Children

Juice is popular with children, and many parents see it as a healthy choice compared with other drinks. But even 100% fruit juice should be limited — here’s why.

Juice is concentrated in sugar and lacks the fibre of whole fruit, so it spikes blood sugar, contributes to tooth decay, and can fill children up so they eat less at meals. Regular juice drinking is linked to a higher risk of excess weight gain.

Practical guidance:

  • Under 1 year: no juice at all.
  • 1–3 years: avoid or strictly limit; if given, dilute and keep to a small amount with a meal.
  • Older children: a small glass occasionally, ideally with food — not sipped through the day.
  • Best everyday drinks: water and milk. Offer whole fruit instead of juice for the fibre and chewing.
